From the sounds of it, it seems like you must have really cared about him. It's going to be hard but you have to move on if things aren't working out. If it is meant to be you guys will be together in the end. For me, after I got out of a 3 year relationship it took me about a year for the pain to stop but I don't think you can ever fully get over someone you love or loved, you just learn to move on with the pain and hope it fades in time.
