How does taking a break from your ex benefit the two of you if you get back together?

My ex (I hate using that term) broke up with me after 16 months together, mostly because of the dumb fighting. Before we dated, we were really good friends for a few years and he told me that even now that we’re not dating, I’m still his really good friend and that won’t change. He also says maybe we can date again, but for now, he just wants to be friends.

So my question is, how does taking a break form dating help us? I still love him dearly… he means the world to me and if I could, I’d have him back right this minute. What will this time somewhat apart do? Our romantic relationship was very laid back… just like our friendship is/was. How will this time "strengthen" us as I’ve so heard it’s supposed to do?
