I recently rescued a beagle. What’s the best way to get him back to a healthy weight?
His stomach is sensitive from being malnourished for so long so he can’t eat the amount a normal dog of his size would eat. I want to make sure he’s getting the nutrients he needs while he’s working his way back to a regular diet.

Feed him a very small amount of food 5 times a day.
I’ve done this with a rescue dog and she gained weight steadily.
I’d recommend talking with your vet.
feed him the amount that he can eat now and every week increase it by just a tiny bit until he eats how much you would like him to eat:]
My parents found a dog that ended up being abandoned (he was 10 plus years when they found him) and when they found him you could see every bone in his body. We were worried about the same thing since he had definitely been on the streets for some time that he would have problems with food. So we first asked a worker at Petco of what we can do. He recommended a High Energy diet for Buster. We also added cooked ground beef to his diet. And within probably a couple weeks the change was unbelievable. He had a nice shiny coat which before was dull. My parents had him for 4 years after they found him. But due to a pinched nerve in his back that caused him to fall down the stairs they figured it was best to put him to sleep.
Yes, talk to your vet. Being malnourished means you have to limit his fat content for awhile… stick with a high protein-low "grease" diet. Start off with science diet, mix in the food you want him to have. If he was starving, limit his food by weight. As he adapts, try and get him on a self feed diet. They offer vitamin powders, but science diet is made to offer full "nutrition" without all the useless calories.
you should just feed him what he can eat and watch that hes eating something. He’s gonna get his appetite back in no time, beagle’s love food!
