I sold my only car to help pay for gas money, but now gas has come down in price. How do I get my car back?
I sold my car on craigslist and buyer paid with money order. Buyer seemed like a good guy, but money order was rejected by my bank. Still trying to contact the buyer both to see if he can send new money order, or can give car back.

I’m not trying to sound rude but why would you sell your car to pay for gas? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of needing gas? The harsh truth is this… you probably won’t get your car back. You’re going to have to get another one somewhere. Honestly, gas is going to go back up to close to $5 a gallon soon so if I were you I’d opt out on the car and get something that’s more efficient, like a moped, scooter, motorcycle, or bicycle… or walk. Or get an old Festiva. Those things are great on gas.

Money orders are paid for in cash, how could your bank not accept it? Unless you didn’t endorse it or something. I’d talk to your bank.
Why was the money order rejected by your bank? The only reason I can think of is that it was not a legit money order.I gotta be honest with you, it sounds like you got scammed. Its not a good idea to sell things to strangers from the internet and give it to them before their payment clears. I would guess you won’t be seeing this guy or your car again.

If his money order did not clear then he stole the car from you. If you wrote him a bill of sale that stated I (your name) sold the car as is for the amount of money the money order was written for to (his name) it is considered a legally binding document. Also, to give someone a fake money order in exchange for services or goods is considered fraud. Please talk to your local law enforcement and do some research on fake money order scams on craigslist. Someone almost got my girlfriend with the same scam.

Because the money order was rejected, you can take him to small claims court. I hope he gave you legitimate info, because if he didnt, you may be forced to go to the police. If he knowingly gave you a check that was bad, that is a crime. Good luck. collegehumor.com rules

It depends a lot on local laws, but if you have not yet transferred the title, then the car is essentially stolen, and you can report it as such, or if you still have a copy of the key, in at least one state you can repo the car yourself, should you be able to locate it. It also depends on reason the money order was rejected. If it was a fake money order, then he’s committed fraud, and you should report it to the police.

I don’t know what’s more pathetic… The guy who posted this question or the idiots who have responded as if it were real. This is a common craigslist scam. NEVER accept a personal check or a money order from a stranger for an expensive item. If you receive a bank check or some other paper instrument, verify account and funds before the buyer leaves your presence. If someone gave you a fake money order or bounced check, 99 times of 100, they are scam artists and you’ve hopefully learned an expensive lesson.
