I debate this question everyday. I have come to the conclusion that since I am such a forgiving person that I will give him a chance, but keep myself semi detached from him until I know whether or not he is serious. This way I am still able to get out before I get hurt and I never have to wonder if we were meant to be or not. I have the exact same problem!

I would caution returning to a relationship that was clearly unhappy since it ended with him leaving you for your best friend. All the growing up you've done in the last two years will be lost if you get tangled up with this person again. There are many men in the world and you grow more as a person by experiencing others lives within your own. I would try meeting new people and leave the dead weight behind you.
