How do I get my dog to come back when I let him off the lead?
My Boxer dog is a year old. When I let him off the lead on the field, he will not come back to me until he has completely tired himself out. He is full of mischief and will stay still until I get right up to him and then run off at full speed. How can I get him back to me easily when I call him?
Dana, are you abit slow. READ THE QUESTION, reply accordingly or F off

Try a retractable lead or try using treats in a bag and shake it.
try shouting
what>
get a dog whistle, its so high pitched the dog will want you to quit it so he will run back to you. i think that’s why they come back, that’s why i would come back lol
haha me n my dog have good times playing in fields when i want him to come back i start running away and expect him to folow me or i get down to his level and try get his attention with something on the ground allways works my dogs a golden retriver had his first bday 2 weeks ago
have a treat in your hand and call him over using a simple command like ‘come’. if he comes then reward him with the treat. if he doesn’t then don’t. after doing this a couple of times a day he will get used to coming when he is called and you will be able to stop rewarding him.
Try a long lead ( we are talking 10-20 metres) so he can run, but you can bring him back when you call him.
The second he comes back, praise him, give him a treat.
Keep that up and eventually you will be able to ditch the lead.
A big thing….NEVER EVER..scold or punish your dog after it comes back to you..for whatever reason…coming back to you should be a joyous wonderful experience that the dog wants to do. It should never feel scared about coming to you.
A great idea would be to have him professionally trained.
You might want to do it yourself in a small confined area where you can teach him ‘new’ tricks and see what he tells you to do…
At one year old, he will have developed habits that you are unable to rid him of, but someone professional can retrain.
I only know one thing….that you have to be the boss.
We’ll you can try teaching him simple things like "sit" "stay" "come" and reward him with treats, dogs can’t understand words but can understand tone of voice so introduce tone when you talk to him. Start of with "sit" and "stay" and reward him with dog treats from your local supermarket/pet store if he does it right give him 1 treat and say good dog or something similar in a happy cheerful tone. After a few times he will think boy I like those treats I’m going to do what they say but If I don’t then I don’t get the treat, If he starts not to respond you need to be firm and sound angry make the dog sit but no treat is given, because he did not do it the first time asked then he will know when you say to come to come and he will be rewarded and if not he doesn’t get the treat. Once he knows the consequences he will start to do what you say with or without treats just keep them around in case tho and if the dog runs of just say " who wants a treat " come on" etc. hope this helps
Your dog is still really a puppy. When he is out in the park there is a lot for you to compete with, for example; his natural curiosity and all those lovely smells. He knows he can have you any time he wants but right now there is lots to explore. I would try putting him on a long lead and let him go as far as the lead allows, then tempt him back to you with a reward. Make a great fuss of him when he comes. Make it seem like a good idea for him to come to you. Never shout because this will just not sound attractive to him, try to sound encouraging.
Maybe try a training class. If you can’t train your Boxer dog to listen, he should be trained properly. Don’t forget that he’s still a puppy.
oh, i know!
. yay!
ok, so, all you need is a whistle and a treat.
you have to make him connect whistle to treat. so all you have to do is: Whistle then immediately give him a treat. repeat this about 5 times 3 times a day for a few days(practice in your living room or something). then when he can make the connection that whistle=treat you can practice in your yard: let him off the leash and let him run around then when you want him to come back you whistle. if he wont come, practice inside the house again.
before you know it you can let him in the field without worrying that he wont come back
You must beginby controlled obedience training. First take classes, then lots of practice; then build off lead work
you must train your dog by letting him remember your tone, voice and command. Practice by letting him go as far as 1 metre but don’t let go of the lead. tell him your command everyday and i guarantee you, he can remember it!
I have a dog that even though its been a year since I met him, he still remembers me by my command and voice!
Dogs dont naturally know the command "come". A lot of training should be done before he is ever let off lead in an unsecured public place, both for his safety and others. Practice in your garden with no distractions around (and everytime he comes to you on his own as well, around the house etc) praise him and reinforce the command "come". Make sure your dog is having fun with you – they should want to be with you and if you are more fun than the other things going on, he wont see the need to run away and find something more exciting. At the moment, his game is for you to chase him – trying running in the opposite direction so it is him chasing you instead and make a big deal out of it when he does – lots of big arm movements, excited voice and lots of silly praise. You may make yourself look a fool if others are around, but yours will be the dog that wants to be with you and thinks you are the most fun thing in the park – and if theirs doesnt, whos the winner?!!
I think you need to use an extension lead and take a squeaky ball out with you or some treats. I know he’s a year old but to be honest Boxers are a bit nuts and I’m not surprised he won’t come back to you. Start off small with an extension lead and take a squeaky ball or some treats and see how you go on. Patience and repetitiveness is the key here.
my dog did that when she was a puppy and we just called her and said lets go and went to the car and after a while she followed. or use food???
lol bet he loving it!!
when he gets that mischievous look in his eye, try calling him to get his attention then YOU run off all excited bout something in the other direction. guarantee he follow u then.
