Can you sue your ex-employer for slander if they lie to the unemploy.office about the reason you were fired?
I worked for my co. for 11 years and a new manager came in who decided he didn’t like me. I’ve always been a top producer, a hard worker and dedicated employee. I know I can’t always expect everyone to like me in life, but I have never had anything but raving reviews from bosses/employers. He terminated me on the spot, with no documented proof of what he accused me of doing- and HR didn’t stop him or even investigate it. He lied to his boss and HR – all based on he/said she/said – accused me of falsifying information- something I didn’t do. Even the other co-workers involved stood up for me, after I was let go, and told HR and my management that I did not do what I was accused of. Then they told the unemployment office this same lie and even added to it by saying that I ADMITTED to what they accused me of doing!! I am just beside myself in disgust and disbelief. Isn’t that slander? Can they lie to UI like that? Can I sue for something like this?
Is there a way to respond to those of you asking me more details? Thank you for the responses. There is so much more to the story- my manager did some very unethical things trying to find "dirt" on me. He even misrepresented himself (as to who he was in the co.) to gather information he later called "an audit". I was never given anything in writing on the terms of my job responsibilities. Lots of loosey goosey in all of this on their part.
Steve- no I’m not in a protected class. Although the atty I spoke with said he saw some grounds for gender discrim. But now I’m wondering about the way they are slandering my professional reputation by lying to UI about why I was let go. I can’t believe they told them I admitted to what they accused me of!!

You do need to contact a lawyer. You need to get witness statements as soon as you can. You can appeal the unemployment if benefits are denied and request a hearing. You can complain to the state Labor Board and request a hearing. You might not win, but what have you got to lose AND the company MUST send a rep to each hearing. At least hit them in the pocket book for the time spent answering to all of this.
You might get a lot of money out of them if they did this improperly. It sounds like federal law may have been violated here also.
First you should appeal the decision unemployment makes…
Secondly, I would contact an employment law firm and request an appointment to discuss the possibility of a case against this company.
An attorney in your area would best be able to determine how solid if any of a case you have.
It does sound like you may have a claim, because they are attacking your professional reputation.
The best advise I can give is to seek legal counsel.
Good luck!
Are you a "Protected Class Employee"?
If so then you may sue your employer……..
If not, find another job and keep paying your taxes!!!
find a new job and move on with you life.
Even if you sued , it would take years to make it to court.
All you could recovered would be lost unemployment payments,
You can appeal the unemployment decision..
Great article and I agree with Bandit, you need witnesses.
