Old owners of dog want him back….?
So about 2 weeks ago I posted a question asking if anyone else thought it was wierd that the previous owners of my dog wanted to "visit" him. Well suprise! They want the dog back.
It’s been a little over a month that we’ve had him and he’s doing so well! He loves us and our other dog and we love him. Him and Ziggy (our other dog) are inseperable.
So anyway I never called them back saying they could come see him. A week later I get a text saying basically that the kids missed the dog and they wanted him back. We nicely replied that we couldn’t do that. They’re reply wasn’t so nice, it basicaly said "No we want our dog back, we’re trying to be understanding with you but we want him back". We replied simply that we were sorry.
Then today I was home alone and the husband showed up! I was home alone and didn’t answer the door. I’m a very petite girl and knew that he wasn’t going to be happy so didn’t risk it and pretended no one was home. He slipped a note under the door saying they were talking to a laywer and would take legal action if they had to and that they would keep coming back until they got the dog back! I called my parents and they came over. Shortly after that the wife and her sister showed up and got nasty with my dad saying they were coming to pick up the dog and he wouldn’t let them. By this point we had called the police because it seemed like they were staking out my house.
We think they showed up again but the cop pulled up and then they were gone. The cop got the story, looked at the dog to make sure that he was ok and then called them telling them they co
For some reason it posted this question twice and cut this one off…..
Well I did save the text messages from them, one says they gave the dog to me. The all show their refusal of our denying they get the dog back. We didn’t pay anything for him and didn’t sign any paperwork they just came and dropped him off, but the police officer that came over was convinced they were in the wrong and even called us back to talk about it.
My bf sent them a text saying that if they didn’t listen to the warning the officer gave them we would press charges against them. They called me agian saying that they didn’t know that each other had gone over there and didn’t know why we thought they were harrassing us but they were just trying to get thier dog back and told us to enjoy him. I hope thats the end of it.
And the dog is about a year and a half and they had him since he was 6 months old. I don’t care that they had him all that time he seems very happy and adjusted with us.

You saved their dog & now the shelfish people want it back! The same thing is going to happen all over again!
You can’t let them have the dog back. Just keep calling the police every time they show up & try make sure you are not home alone in case they do try & get violent or try find a way to steal the dog.
Good luck & merry christmas
wow im sorry
did they give you the dog? a deal is a deal. if you just agreed to provide care for the dog for a limited time then it could be different.
you didn’t finish your story
i wouldn’t give the dog back
too bad for them, they already gave it to you
have you asked the cop for advice?
i’m sure he would have told you what you should do or what to expect
i think they’re bluffing about having a lawyer
but who knows
what a bunch of jerks..ugh…
sorry i couldn’t give you better advice
but don’t give up the dog
I’m pretty sure they can’t take him back if the dog is legally registered with you
nice answer Gypsy,
now there is someone with good advice =)
Let them threaten (saying they call lawyer)
Do NOT let them on your property
Put up No Trespassing Signs on your property to validate this point
Call the police each & every time they show up & also document each time they contact you. Do not knowingly answer any phone calls from them — ask the police to help you protect your own safety & your property (residence as well as dog)…. see if stalking laws would apply to thier behavior
Reply to them in writing, mailed with delivery confirmation that they Willingly Gave Up That Dog…. that you gave this dog a home, that the dog is now established in your home & that you have no intention of returning this dog to them
Unless they made some strange stipulation with you at the beginning of this arrangement that they could relinquish the dog, then I doubt they have any legal ground to stand on
if they gave him to u they can’t take it back no lawyer would even take that case no worries there no case unless u said ud take care of the dog then bye bye dogie
I agree with everything that Gypsy said.
Another thing to add is do you happen to have any proof that they were selling/giving away their dog? Like a Craigslist ad with something to prove it is the dog (like a pic) and something to prove it was them (such as a phone number), a clipping from the newspaper, emails back and forth from the previous owners, etc? If so, you at least have proof that they were in fact trying to find a new home for the dog so they cannot call the police and say it was stolen.
Do they have any paperwork proving ownership of the pet. Was there any contract between the two of you stating a transfer of ownership. Did you give them money for the pet. Was there any posting stating they were looking for a new home for the pet. All these things will help your case. If they have no proof of ownership, going to a lawyer won’t do them any good. They are just trying to scare you. Just get a restraining order.
Ouch. We’ve given a dog away before, but it didn’t turn out anywhere near like that.
Of course when we gave him away it was to a family friend, and we did visit him often. Still, even though we loved the little guy we never asked for him back. We did tell them though that if something ever happened where they couldn’t or didn’t want him anymore that we did want him back.
As it happened a year ago we got a call that they were moving into an apartment and couldn’t take him along. They remembered what we said about wanting him back if something happened and we got him back after five years.
I would think about it before slamming the doors. Why did they give him away in the first place? How long did they have him before you? A dog is a family member, so I can understand where they are coming from. (Even if they are in the wrong for harassing you like that).
But if they really love him and there is zero chance of them changing their minds again, and of course they’ve had him for awhile, then I would consider it. What’s a month of bonding vs 3 years or something?
If that isn’t the case though, I’d invest in a new security system they sound a little crazy O.o
Sorry your going through this! Good Luck!
i agree with top post and if you are really fearful as you said several of the family members who want the dog back have came to your house i would gather up and documented proof you have that they gave or sold you the dog the police reports and go get a restring order.
i the mean time if your afraid they might try to steal the dog back safety in number when you are walking and doing potty. best of luck to you
Get a lawyer and sue them for harassment. They gave the dog away or sold it for what ever reason, and that was it. There is no laws that state you have to give them visitation. Unless it is a purebred puppy and you have a contract, but it does not sound like it.
If you registered the ownership of the dog in your name they have no legal recourse. What the husband is doing is trespassing, stalking, harassment, causing a neighborhood disturbance, and a bunch of other charges I can list. He can go to jail if he continues.
Bummed out in BC, Canada,
OMG…as of today, I am suddenly in the similar hell-and who does this stuff anyway?! I adopted this little chihuahua with health and behaviour issues 8 months ago from a young couple(about 26/27) who were having their 6th kid, and now, months after HAVING this 6th kid, they are divorcing and the woman writes me 1st saying oh…do you think we could have her back. Well I write this nice email genuinely empathizing, but saying that we are both so attached to one another(the dog and I) that separation at this point would devastating to both of us so while that isnt an option, that they would be welcome to visit.
Well, the woman goes off the deep end saying all this horrible accusatory stuff that I am such a selfish horrible person and how this IS her kids dog and how could I be so cruel to children and how she WILL get it back and has talked to a lawyer etc, etc and I still am in shock about all of it because its absolutely out of the blue and insane. They didn’t want the dog! Said she wouldn’t potty train(which I have achieved and I think they just didnt have time with all their little kids-which I might add is NOT even safe for a dog under 3 lbs to live with all those rug rats), and that she was just too needy etc, and her husband couldn’t stand her and the email contact before that was how happy they were that they had given the dog to such a good home etc, and yet now-BAM! This pyscho email threatening me and saying I have 7 days to respond insinuating that something ominious will happen after that-its so sickening and demented! I LOVE that little dog and unlike her, at 40-I don’t have kids, only my pets which have all lived to very ripe old ages, so I just cannot understand what the hell this is about….and she now has SIX kids under 9yrs old and is apparently now divorcing so then she will also be a single mother!!!! She didn’t have the time or patience for it before when she was still married and only had 5 kids, so where is this coming from?!
Anyway, I have been too sick to even THINK about responding to it, and really, I also don’t have anything else to say, but now I feel like I should look into free legal counsel because her pyscho-ness and the randomness of all of this has freaked me out. She DIDN’T want this dog-plain and simple-she was done with it, and cleaning up after it and dealing with its neediness and now here she is threatening me and saying evil things in an email about my character and worst of all, the talk about taking her back.
Any extra advice? I just don’t get what is wrong with people. And that poor little dog was so underweight when I took her in also and already had a broken and healed fracture in its little tail, and now she is potty trained, my other dogs(14, and 9yrs) and even my 16yr old cat love her, and she is so healthy, happy and fully cared for including all the attention and more that ANY dog could want, so its actually HER that is being selfish and cruel in my opinion.

Well i hate to say it BUT your all CRUEL people,if i gave up my dog and a week later wanted ehr back, not relizing how much it hurts. then the perosn should give her back….Sick world.this is why people get shot and stalked and just plain tormented. dogs are people,so you should give them there damn dog back you sick puppy!!
how would you feel? think about it,people make mistakes!
i agree with the above comment!!!!!!!!!!!!
Name me one person on this planet who hasnt made a mistake
Give them their dog back!!!! He’s their family member
By u keeping the dog u should feel like a bad person
I am in the same boat, a day ago my ex gave me his dog cause he could no longer properly care for him, he kept the dog in a basement. My ex lost his job and was feeding him human soup which gave him worms, the dog even had a seizure and fell down the steps because of poor nutrition. When i got him he was skinny and infested in fleas. That same night i got the dog my ex decided he changed his mind and wanted him back. There is no proof he owns the dog except the paperwork where he bought the dog 6 years go.
He doesn’t have a license or anything like that and he gave me all the dogs paperwork ( like where he bought the dog and the registration form he never filled out) By Ohio’s laws can he legally take the dog back? I mean he wanted him back the same day he gave him to me and i don’t want the dog to end up skinny and back in the basement, its not right…Help what can i do if this goes as far as involving the cops or even court
