Any ideas how to get your mind off the pain of a tattoo?
In a little over 7 hours I will be getting my first tattoo, with is my late grandmothers name. I’m expecting it to hurt quite a bit since I’m getting it on my left wrist, but I was hopping for ways to get your mind off of the pain (EX: A stress ball.)
Best answer will be given after I get my tattoo to the person who’s idea helped the most. Thanks.

Well my first tattoo didn’t hurt at all….actually pain doesn’t really bother me…
It would help to have someone there, like a family member or a friend, that you can talk to or squeeze their hand or whatever while the tattoo is being done…
There is always the option of taking a pain med beforehand, but honestly I’ve never tried it and I don’t know how much that would help.
I promise you it wont hurt half as much as you think.
As long as you keep it covered in some cling film for a little while…or if thats a bit awkward use bepanthen or fougera which is a vitamin a and D ointment (its quite cool which feels nice)
It wont hurt for more than an hour after its done…just don’t scratch it…thats hurts.
The best thing to do is just do what you’d normally do…you’ll forget its there until you see it again.
Promise it doesnt hurt.
Oh suck a sweet! Like when your ears pop on a plane suck on a sweet…and talk to whoever tattooing you… takes your mind riiiight off it
I actually focused on the pain, it was very soothing and numbing, then bam I was done
be sure to follow instructions and keep medicine on it that they give you to place on it . Triple antibiotic ointment or neosporing be sure to keep it covered as they will explain to you until it has stopped bleeding if any occurs . gauze to cover for 24 hours but be sure to apply ointment twice a day will keep it from drying up and hurting and the healing process will be less pain full. good luck . hope this helps.I know it did for mine.:)
well 1 on my hip bone & that hurt so bad & it was too deep in some spots & i got drilled & i have a chinese lettering on the back of my neck so i found out that lookin at something & focusing on it & out lining it with my eyes i found that helps a little but tatoos dont really hurt at all..it just depends on how tha person is..if there heavy handed or not.
Make conversation with the tattoo artist, or whoever goes with you to get it done (if anyone). Look at the pictures on the wall – tattoo artists usually have a lot of cool ones. Listen to the music that’s playing. You could do a stress ball if you wish, but I wouldn’t bother!
Believe me – it’s not going to be excrutiating! When people ask me how much my tattoos hurt, I always tell them to press the edge of a fingernail to their skin and drag it across…that’s about what it feels like. More of a deep, dull scratching. It’s honestly not that bad…you’ll be surprised by how not bad it is, even on that location. It will honestly probably be more annoying than anything else.
good luck
if u brake ur finger it will distract tha pain….i know from personal experionce……i cant spell lol
yep, make sure when you sit in the chair that he face you towards the mirror. Take a piece of paper and write this backwards T R U H T O N L L I W . Stick it to your forehead and look in the mirror.
try to think about things around the shop, like people and art. also just think that it really isnt that bad and it will be over soon.
i always think of the meaning behind my tattoo and then its not as bad
I chew sour bubble gum and drink lemonade every time I get tattooed, the craptastic combination of flavors takes your mind off the pain just a little.
I just got my first two tattoos on Saturday, it hurt in some areas because it felt like the needles were dragging. It’s best to have a friend there to talk to, also don’t tense up, and breathe deeply and slowly. Though wrist tattoos might hurt quite a bit, you have to remember that you won’t be in pain too long because the tattoos in the area are usually quite small.
Pain is different to each person
I’ve got a tattoo on my stomach and was told it would be
painful.I didn’t feel anything till the end of it which was
a hot feeling, and maybe a few times I was aware it
was happening, nothing horrible like a cat scratch I guess.I brought my mp3 with me
and played a song that I got into and wasn’t focusing on
the tattoo, talking, music, looking at other things or people, and just relaxing
really helps out.If you really want it the pain wont be a problem
All you have to do to get your mind off is talk to the tattoist thats if he is willing to talk while doing the tattoo, my tattooist was and just talking to him made it okay, as he was really funny and made me forget about the pain. thats what they usually do just try an make you feel comfortable with them. just try not to worrie, after all the tattoo isnt just one uve sed o yeah i want that. This tatto really means something to you. Good Luck! hope it looks Great xxx
Well, if it’s on your wrist then don’t worry because you barely feel anything. But try not to look at them while they poke the needle in you, I just looked away for the whole time. But it numbs after a while so any pain that you do feel will be deadened.
Try a stress ball (I keep them on hand and give them to my clients for free during tender/painful tattoos) and as mentioned, talk to a buddy or your artist. It’s gonna hurt either way but a simple name won’t take long and will be constant reminder of your love for your Grandmother.
If a television is on, it’s nice for you to be able to focus your attention on that. I keep one playing in the shop unless the client just wants music.
the guy up their who said take a pain med. is stupid because that will thin out your blood and make you bled more so it will make it harder on the tattoo artist.
