How does free will work?
If I have the same free will as you, than why aren’t our choices the same? What are humans without "free will"… forced to do everything? Our choices aren’t the same because of our genetic make-up and life experience.. which vary for everyone, so how free are we to choose our state of mind which determine our choices… doesn’t it?
I choose to hit someone because of the current conditioning of my mind… which i didn’t choose…
Are choices uncaused? If they are than the higher cause will ALWAYS make you choose a possibility..
Are we in a magic bubble immune to the natural forces at work? What makes us choose something? Chemicals in the brain?

(Sometimes my long answers are not appreciated, so I will make this one as succinct as possible.)
You are very close to understanding the truth. That which dictates what we do and are is our subconscious mind. And normally we have no access and no control over it.
This is the explanation as to why we do not sometimes do as we consciously choose. Our subconscious mind has made some other decision and it rules.
Free-will is a mechanism, not individual choices. We both have free-will (you say), but we choose to exercise it differently. Like if I get 50 dollars and you get 50 dollars, we might spend it differently.
The rest of your problem concerns whether total free-will actually exists. Read about the compatibilist position as a middle way between free-will and determinism.
Edit: ann excellent introduction to this problem is in Thomas Nagels’ ‘What does It All Mean?’ A very short book!
Apparently, free will is an emergent behavior of brain activity.
The question is how real it is, and how able most people are to use it to overcome primal urges and instincts.
i think i am going through what you are. we do not have free will really. if you have a functioning brain, then you will commit an action based on reasoning. for the most part we have a reason for doing things. but these actions are based on decisions which are based on beliefs due to our reasoning. where does this reasoning occur? in our brains. we can not help what happens inside or brains. our brains indirectly affect our actions. everything is a series of alignments. our brain takes in information and i guess it starts from there. too much information to go into. and of course this affects my views on religion, spirituality and every thing else.
Free will is the major quality that relates human beings as persons. It signifies the personhood of a person that sets it apart from other animals. Only human beings as persons employ free choice. It also sets us apart from angels and demons as religionists would say. It is only in free will that men are called by their natural vocation to be called to choose what is right and morally upright. Deprived of free choice, men would be lower than the angels and would be reduced to being equal to any other animal on earth. Free will also evolves to form ones morality, values, priorities, and affections.
Free will is the freedom to accept the consequences of one’s behavior.
I don’t think that there is any thing like free will.We choose something as guided by our circmustances for which we are not responsible. Our choices and deeds are controlled by/within situation given to us.
Because of human ego we live in illusion, thinking that we are free .We define freedom to suit our ego.
We are small parts of the universe again which is not created and governed by us.
The opportunities for free choice are truly rare.
Since causes produce effects, the choices are effects produced by previous causes. It’s rocks and water in a barrel rolling down a long slope.
Within the five components that Tientai had as part of ichinen sanzen, there is volition. There are moments when volition is pure, we need to study and practice enlightened doctrine to free that volition from deluded patterns.
