I've read HP, and from what you've said, this doesn't sound very much like that.

The magical school is obviously the setting for most of the story in HP, not just a couple of chapters.

Magicians in the real world used wands long before HP was ever thought of, though I'm struggling to think of another fantasy story that features them. A lot of fictional wizards (eg Gandalf) have a staff instead of a wand.

Immortality and the desire for it feature in many stories. The way in which Voldemort becomes immortal is not like your character. He splits his soul into several pieces, which are then bound into inanimate objects or other living creatures. The things that carry the pieces of his soul are called horcruxes. As long as at least one horcrux still exists, he cannot truly die. If his physical body is destroyed, that severely weakens him, but he can still act and can eventually grow a new body.

It seems anything to do with magic these days is compared to HP. Though a fan, I read other things as well, and write them. As previously mentioned, magic schools, wands, and concepts of immortality and souls have been used often and in varying ways in literature prior to HP and will be used again. Don't be discouraged. Your world is just that, YOUR world, don't let someone who may not have read too much outside of recent popular fiction lead you to believe you're unoriginal.

On a side note, the soul staple idea sounds nifty, it reminds me a bit of Peter Pan having his shadow stitched to him.
