How long does it take for the hair to grow back?
Hello!
First off, I would like to give you guys some background information: I have a very lazy horse who needs spurs to get him going. Please don’t say "You’re mean for using spurs!" I need them.
Anyways, My horse is always getting spur marks on his left side (I have a stronger left leg). The first mark was a little rub/cut that broke the skin. I’m letting that one heal, by putting my spur lower. The first mark was unexpected because I’ve always used the same spur and it never left a mark. That was about 1 month ago. Since then, he hasn;t gotten any more marks. Today, after I rode, I discovered that I had rubbed some of the hair off right under where the first mark had been. It wasn’t as bad as the first one, seeing that there was no cub, only a rub.
Please don’t think that I don’t feel bad! I feel HORRIBLE! I love my horse so much and to see him like that makes me so sad. =(
Now, My questions are :
-Will the hair grow back?
-How long will it take the hair to grow back?
-What can I do to help the hair grow back faster?
-How can I prevent cuts/bad rubs? (I have to use spurs)
-I use rounded spurs, but are rubber tipped spurs more mild on the skin?
Thanks so much!

When the skin is cut and damaged you are risking damaging the hair follicles which will prevent hair from growing back…ever. If the skin is just damaged a little then there will be inflammation present which kills melanocytes that give the hair pigment and so the hair grows back white. This can stay white forever or eventually the follicles will repopulate with melanocytes and the color will come back.
But I am assuming your horse is not dead to your leg and is not in pain and is not having a bad time while being ridden and in which case you need to up his energy in his diet to give him more energy. There are causes for a horse being lazy and I just listed them so eliminate them and then his laziness will go away. So:
-Make sure he isn’t dead to your leg
-He is having a good time while being ridden (keep it varied and not painful).
-Make sure he has enough energy in his diet to support his exercise program.
-Make sure he is not in pain from an ill fitting saddle, being cold backed etc etc.
i think u should get new ones
You can buy certain spurs that instead of all metal theres like a rubber knob on the end (try this link) they tend to be alot softer and gentler on a horse than just the all-metal ones

secondly, if you use a vet cream called Horse Man’s Dream, you can put it on the rubbed spot everyday until the hair grows back. The cream heals cuts and makes hair grow back
