Summary: I know this is long so…in summary basically her sister has treated my g/f like crap for the past few years, and it’s made her hate herself and not see how much I love her.

Well, I’m 20 and she’s 19…we’ve known each other for 5 years, and have been going out for 2. Since I’ve known her she’s had no confidence whatsoever – she was depressed at the age of 12, and her elder sister took the chance to destroy her confidence. 

She would call her fat, ugly and stupid and totally belittle her, and obviously it led to her believing it all. There is much, much more to say about her sister however if I wrote about all that this question would be stupidly long.

From the moment I saw her I had a crush on her – she looked beautiful, and was a really nice, but shy girl. I was also really shy, and when our friends started hanging out together, we also did and that’s what made us get together. For about 6 months after we got together, she was too scared to tell her family because she knows her sister would not ‘approve’ of me – whcih is honestly because I was a shy, sort of nerdy guy, and her sister likes guys that are essentially wannabe gangsters. Anyway, when her family found out her sister laid into me behind my back, saying she’s disgusting for going with someone like me, blah blah. Obviously this effected me, but that’s not really the point of this.

The problem is…she doesn’t believe I love her in the slightest. She thinks I find her ugly, and that I’m only with her to ‘wind her up’. The truth is I love her with all my heart, and I really would do anything for her. And I find her totally georgous, both her appearance and her personality. Everything her sister tells her basically sticks in her brain – one time, when she was called fat, she ended up almost being admitted to hospital because she wouldn’t eat and was dangerously close to being anorexic. This was really upsetting to see how much she hates her body, and I would do anything I could to show her just how beautiful she is, but she doesn’t see it :(

We don’t really have a sex life because she is terrified of me seeing her body, and me being disgusted and leaving her. I really do understand how she feels like this after all the things her sister has put her through, but knowing my girlfriend is thinking that about me is wearing me down, and my confidence is greatly lowered because of this. She doesn’t like showing any positive emotions to me at all – for example, she’ll tell me she hasn’t missed me one bit and that she wouldn’t really care if we left…which I really am starting to believe, despite her telling me that she’s just really scared of saying, and she actually does love me/miss me.

I’m the only one that knows how bad her confidence really is – her mother doesn’t really know about her feelings much, and assumes we have a normal, healthy relationship. I feel really helpless on my own to help her, despite me wanting to so much….her sister has done damage which I don’t know how to repair. Her sister moved out last year, although it’s nearby and her sister tells her to go to hers, and she’s too scared to say ‘No’ so does almost everyday. And the more she’s around her sister, the worse she seems to get. About a year ago, she had a bit argument with her sister, and she stayed over mine for a few days. It was like being with a totally different person, she was much more confident and we were so happy.

I just want to do whatever it takes to show her how much I love her. She means so much to me, and always has – I enjoy every moment of being with her, even if I don’t totally believe she feels the same. We get on so well, we make each other laugh and I feel so lucky for even being with her. But her sister has ruined, and is continuing to ruin, our relationship. I can honestly see myself one day just exploding when I’m over her sisters and telling her what I think of her, and how I think she’s scum for treating her sister like she has. I really she’d cut off all contact with her sister and focus on being more confident, however I will never make her do that to her own sister, regardless of the situation, and I’m not going to force her to do anything.

Anyway, I guess my question is…what can I do to make her feel like she’s loved by me, and see how beautiful she is? And what can I do to show my love?

Yes you can make you child look like Batman or superman and they could break through metal walls and flying with X-ray vision and saving the world from destruction. OK maybe not that far but you get what I mean. Yes this ‘magic’ is called Genetic modification or genetic engineering. It is possible to make your children look like Tom Cruise; Genetic Modification goes so far that scientists say that they can give a brain which is as smart as Albert Einstein. Can you believe it; you can have someone who looks like Paris Hilton with the brain of Einstein! You are probably thinking that this is too good to be true and that I am probably lying but let me explain to you what Genetic Modification is and the many advantages it brings along with the many problems it may create in the future.

Genetic Modification! The name says it all, it a bit like cloning except for some difference. With cloning you can make someone look identical to their parents. But Genetic Modification can change the characteristics of a living organism or you can even remove bad genes which run in the family, for example cancer, heart disease and eye-sight problems. Plants and animals can be given characteristics. To do this they change the DNA in the nucleus of the cell. If they want to put in a specific gene, the use a gene gun, it fires microscopic bullets; no these are not life-threatening bullets coated with gunpowder but ones coated in foreign DNA into a plant or embryo, embryo is just another fancy name for a fertilized egg. The foreign DNA combines with the host’s DNA and alters the host’s genetic make-up.

Simple, isn’t it? This technology allows us to physically change the appearance or any genes of a plant or animal. It brings with it many advantages. Genetic Modification is becoming very popular in plants and mainly is aimed at crop production. Using genetic modification they can improve the quality of the crops like flavour, appearance and nutritional value. They can also increase the tolerance of the crops, like less need for water. Genetic modification food supporters say that Genetic engineering is essential in feeding the worlds population. The reasons for this is that in countries where the soil is poor using GM they can make the crops grow in those conditions and can make summer crops grow in winter.

Here it goes:
As planned, I choked once I did see him. The pretty brunette at the front of the room had taken no time to register me into a desk. It’s really, honestly too bad that I had been seated in front of him, definitely. I wasn’t quite sure of why. In my eyes, it was between the fact that I had actually been forced to be near him, and the revulsion I felt because I couldn’t see his face. Either way, I knew we would have to meet, somehow.
Hearing the frantic beat of my own heart is what startled me.
It was not something I could erase-the feeling I got in my stomach when I felt his warm breath over my shoulder. Even though I knew I was already trapped, spoken for, I still wanted my heart to listen to me. This attraction to him was subtle, not a situation I would have ever placed myself in. I could change that, defy destiny. If this was destiny.
So I ignored it. I flung the idea out of my brain and ordered it to never come back. The natural sentiment, however, remained unscathed.
Suddenly, a tingle of warmth touched my shoulder. At first, I was sure he had poked me, but when I turned to reject it, his face stayed steady below, on the sheet of paper he had been scribbling on, and his back was glued to the rear of the chair. Result: nowhere within reach of me.
I could have forgotten, how quickly he seemed to look up, but it would have certainly returned.
“Hello.” His lovely lips moved in a chain reaction. I flinched, bewildered.
It took me almost a quarter of a second before I could even make up a response. “Hi.” One magic word was all I needed to say; nothing fancy.
I’d thought I’d seen it all: the astounding good looks, the silver eyes. But the grin that now played on his lips, was all I needed-wanted- to stop time. It was sideways, crooked, but hopelessly remarkable. There could only be one word for a smile like that: irresistible.
He sat up, and gleefully held out his hand. “I’m Michael Chast,” His voice was almost as enthralling. “And you are?”
Oh, my turn to speak. Wait. I couldn’t remember my name. What was it? “Jaycee Swallows.” Relief.
The smiled hadn’t yet calmed down. “Well, Jaycee Swallows, I would love to show you around, if you’re alright with that?”
Here it goes again. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t talk. What was wrong with me? “Great. That would be great.” No, I didn’t mean to say that.
“Can I see your schedule?”
Word vomit. “Yeah, no problem.” No. No.
