Me and my two little brothers have recently taken interest in playing D&D. Having played Temple of Elemental Evil and every other turn based CRPG that can be played hotseat-style, we’ve decided to try out D&D. I bought the 3.5 DM guide, Player’s Guide and Monster guide and downloaded a bunch of pre-made adventures from the official site. I know the 4th edition rules are out but we figured instead of constantly having to keep up to date on the new rules we’d just dive into the wellspring of adventures made for 3.5

Most of my questions I’ve been able to find answers for in the books or by looking online. We played nearly completely through the adventure "A Dark and Stormy Night" we found on the official D&D website. We got up to the part where you meet the Dark Knight and he attacked, then they had to go to bed for school in the morning.

There are 2 questions we came across in playing that for the life of us we can’t find the info for.

First off: When you sleep, is there any chance of being attacked? I know that in games like Baldur’s Gate you can get attacked when you rest, but there doesn’t seem to be any modifier or dice roll or whatever to determine if you get attacked while sleeping. If so that’s fine, it’s just it seems odd that you can just rest a bunch of times till fully healed with no apparent repercussions (And if so why gain so little HP for an 8 hour rest?) So yeah, is there a die roll or something used to determine if they sleep unmolested?

Second, they’ve found several magical items so far. However I dunno if I’m supposed to just tell them what the item does off the bat or make them identify it. There are no wizards in their party (Just a barbarian and a ranger) but that’s cuz I’m letting them play as whatever they wanna roleplay as. (I figure if we ever do an adventure that requires a mage for any reason, I’ll create one to join them just for that adventure)

As DM, I told my brother (The ranger) that I’ll allow him to use Identify Item scrolls even if he doesn’t meet the requirements for it so that they don’t have to constantly go to shops and pay 100 GP every time they want to identify something.

However in Baldur’s Gate, I recall my Ranger being able to automatically identify some items (usually the weaker ones) so what determines that? In the description of the items it always reads as:

Item Name
Item description (What it does)
Then in itallics it says "faint" "Moderate" etc. and then a type of magic like "Abjuration" or "Conjuration", then CL and a number (I assume that’s the character level required to use the item?) then what type of item it is (Forge Ring, Craft Wonderous Item, etc. which I assume is to determine it’s base cost) and then some random skill name in ittallics like "Bull rush" or "Comprehend language."

Is there some wisdom or knowlege (insert type of knowledge) check used to determine if they can auto-identify it like my ranger can in Baldur’s Gate? And what does the "Faint, moderate, etc." "Type of magic" mean?

Thanks in advance for all your assistance.

Hello and thanks for your great help in advance:

Would appreciate whatever help some of you folks can give who possess greater tech/computer skills and experience than I.

I am using an HP desktop computer running Windows XP (home). It is an older model (purchased 2003 – I realize I need an upgrade and am shopping!), so the hard drive only has 80 Gig capacity. (very low by today’s standards, I realize).

Problem is, I’ve never used the HD to store all that much really, except in recent years I’ve taken lots of digital photos and scans and put them on the HD, but I just summed up all the file sizes, and they – in total – are less than ONE Gigabyte.

I used to run Windows Explorer Web browser, but over the years, it got worse and worse – slower, more "buggy," problems galore, etc. Now I use Firefox and have been much happier (far fewer problems/bugs/crashes), and just a couple years ago it – and the computer in general – ran fast; like a top. Since, I’m now on the 3rd generation Firefox, and the computer doesn’t run as efficiently. I’m always skeptical of "new and improved" versions of various software, etc. – they are usually a mess, one way or the other.

Anyway, my computer now runs much more slowly and I’m having screen freeze problems, etc. Never much happened before. Why?

Here’s what I’ve done to try and help myself: I ran the "Disk Clean-up" utility, and it was able to rid my hard drive of ca. 1 and one half Gigs of useless files, data, etc. Also, I ran my virus scan, and it searched through all ca. 1 million files, yet returned no virus detections. I thought these utilities might make a difference, yet they have not.

Here’s the rub, too. I used to check my hard drive capacities on "My Computer" just to see how much hard drive space was being taken up. I’ve always heard/read that the more hard disk space is taken up, the slower your computer runs. Heretofore, I’ ve always seemed to have ca. 10-11 Gigs used up and the computer ran fast. NOW, however, mysteriously it reads (even after the Disk Clean-up) ca. 18.3 Gigs used up, with 52.1 "free." I am wondering where in the world I acquired all this gunk taking up hard drive space? Also, I forgot to say, I searched through all "programs" and software titles to delete ones that are useless or that I don’t use and got rid of lots of junk to free up space.

I’m wondering if music files may be the culprit, though my iTunes library isn’t really that big (fewer than 80 songs). Hard to figure this out, actually.

But, other than that, I am mystified as to why the computer runs slower than a 7 year itch (worse than ever) and why it’s so "buggy" these days??!!

I have noticed that since I loaded the Magic Jack software on there (VOIP service; cheap), the computer runs slower. I’ve taken to unplugging the thing when I just read and write emails; surf, etc. Seems to run faster.

I’m wondering if junk I’ve accessed on sites like Hulu.com (internet TV) stays on your hard drive?? Or is it "streaming video," meaning (I hope) that the files do NOT stay on your hard drive? Or do they?? If they do – HOW can I find those useless files in order to delete them? And any other useless file? Often, when I type in the "search for files" thing for a file by name, it returns the message that "no file by that name found" – or whatever.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Especially how to FIND useless file downloads and delete them. But then why does the computer run so bad, with apparently no viruses and AFTER the disk clean-up??

Thanks,

Dave

I just got a wand that turns on (like a flash light) when you flick it. lol yes i’m a dork. LUMOS! :)

What HP thing would you like them to make that actually worked?

I can’t wait for the amusement park to open up, i’m planning on going with some friends the summer it opens.

What ride are you most anticipating/what do you hope they have there?

I’m assuming they’ll have some sick roller coasters named after magical creatures and such, and i heard they are going to have a ride where they give you a wand you flick to effect the outcome of the ride.

I’m in a HP mood right now, hence the random questions.
Oops wrong category but i guess it works. Sorry if people get offended, that’s happened to me before :/
Not yet it’s opening in i think a year in florida. You should plan another trip to go, it’s going to be fantastic :)

–Sorry in advance for the length. As I sad, be a real (wo)man and read it all!! I really need help on this :/

Have you ever been trying to write a book and then gotten depressed because someone has said its similar to something else?

I can promise that I havent read Harry Potter, and its also really depressing that my friend has compared my story to it because HP is so popular. I don’t want to be compared when I’m published, because I don’t want my book scrutinized.

There are these similarities, supposedly:
1. My story has a magic school
2. My magicians use wands
3. My story involves immortality and souls

It’s disheartening and I don’t want to lose my motivation to write, because I’ve spent years creating my fantasy world and I have weaved up the plot, characters and everything COMPLETELY myself

Things in my defense are:
1. My story is set in the 16-17th century, and the school is simply like a regular magic school in a fantasy book, like plenty of other books, not some hidden place in our day and age. The school is also not so important to the plot (important enough to be necessary but not directly relevant to my main story — only two chapters are set there)

2. I have an innovative magic system that I think is quite fresh, and wands are necessary, so I can’t change them, and there’s no shouting out of words or anything (I dont want to reveal this)

3. Immortality and Souls are also crucial to the story, and are the driving force of some the antagonists. I did not know HP had immortality in it, but I’m sure Rowling isnt the first person to use either of these. I’ve thought up ways for my characters to be immortal

Could you please tell me what you think about these things? Soften it if you have to lol.

Also, in my story, when a body/vessel is damaged enough their soul will escape. This is ‘death’. One of the antagonists is a man with his soul stapled to his body with magic. His body heals near-instantly, and so if he’s ‘killed’ he won’t ‘die’ because his soul remains til his body is functioning again — making him immortal (as he just gets back up). That’s not like Voldemort, is it?

He’s not the only immortal, but the only one that might be similar.
Thanks in advance folks (y)
