what does the bible say about marriageIf you are wondering what the Bible says about marriage, it really depends on which book you read.  Obviously the views of the Old Testament are rather stricter than those expressed in the New Testament.  You need to be careful when looking to the Bible for answers. Sure use it as guidance but the contents need to be interpreted in the light of the times those people lived in.  Not all of the information contained in this book is relevant to the issues and crisis that can affect marriages today.

For example, the “What God has joined together let no man separate” teaching is wonderful if you are in a successful marriage and both of you are happy. But I don’t believe God would want any woman to stay with an abusive husband or vice versa. And while I believe that marriage is for life, there are always exceptions to the rule.  Unfortunately in our society today, the number of marriages breaking down is on the increase.  This could be for a number of reasons, not least of which is that divorce is more socially acceptable these days. It could also be the fact that people often enter into marriage contracts without putting enough thought into whether the other person is the right match for them.  Just look at any number of celebrities, some of whom appear to believe that a Wedding chapel should be fitted with revolving doors.

It is very easy to walk away when your marriage hits a bad spot and sadly that is the mistake a lot of people make.  But the fact is that every relationship will hit the rocks on occasion.  What is important is what you do to put it back on the happy track. Men and women are so different that it can lead to communication issues. Then you add in life hassles such as worries over children, money, mortgages, jobs etc and it is easy to see why romance may go a little cold.

But before you head for the divorce lawyer, why not invest a little money into some education. Buy the Magic of Making Up and see if you can apply these theories to your own situation. So many people will separate from their partner and end up living a life of misery on their own. Or they move onto the next marriage and then the next etc.  If you once loved your partner, you can rekindle this lost love and it really doesn’t take a huge effort. In fact it usually takes less time and energy than trying to find someone else to love and learning how to handle their faults.  Better stick to the devil you know and usually love on some level!

So pay less attention to wondering what does the Bible say about marriage and start concentrating on getting those romantic feelings back into your own.  You will be very glad you did.

Here is some of the evidence I have found for the NT authenticity…..please read it all and then insult, yell, agree, or whatever. I just want to know what you think about this.

The people who wrote the gospels it would seem had to know Jesus or knew someone who knew Jesus (people do debate however if it was actually the people given credit of writing the text; you decide). If you read the gospels, the men who wrote them were honest to the point it hurt their reputation. People who say that the story is a legend aren’t thinking.
For a legend to start two things are needed:
1. Isolation
2. Time (At least one or two generations)
Jesus and His disciples were surrounded by people (millions of people in Jeruselem at passover time). Plus Israel was in the crossroads of the Roman Empire at the time. If these men were telling a lie then facts would have been disputed and their "religion" would have been shut down very quickly by other people. The men who wrote the Bible CHALLENGED people in some very high positions. Remember history would tell us that the people didn’t so much disagree with the apostles more that they only attempted to silence them.

If it is hard evidence you want there are over 3000 ancient manuscripts of the gospels and over 24,000 of the whole Bible (Scholars use these to cross-check accuracy with the Bible that people read today). Scholars have found that the gospels are 99.5% textually accurate and the .5% that is "wrong" is actually added text not information that has been taken away. The reason for this is that while the text was being copied the men doing the copying actually added notes in the margins (like a footnote) and it eventually was inserted into the actual text. Also bear in mind that by the 2nd century (100-200 A.D.) the whole NT had been quoted in other people’s work except for eleven verses. By the year 250 it was possible to not even have an actual NT document, yet be able to recreate the whole work.

The "John Ryland Fragment" is a part of the gospel of John shown to be written 25 years after Christ’s death. This shows that the gospel(s) was a first century document and that the people who knew Jesus were still around to write about His life. 9 different writers wrote the 27 books of the NT (according to scholars). They all agree on essentials but each focuses on certain details (Ex. Jesus’ ministry, His miracles, and His persecution). Remember this: all the disciples were martyred for what they believed except John who died in exile. People won’t die for what they know or believe to be untrue. This is just to point out that apostles weren’t making it up the story for laughs. Either way pretty strange that only a few people were able to "turn the world upside down".

There were contemporaries who wrote about Jesus. THESE ARE OUTSIDE SOURCES.

Tacitus-Roman- He said Jesus followers were numerous in Rome and that the early Christians denied polytheism, followed Jesus’ teachings and believed Him to be God. He also wrote that Jesus was executed when Tiberius was emperor.

Josephus- Jewish Historian- discussed Jesus

Babylonian Talmud- Jesus worked magic and led Israel astray; He was crucified on Passover Eve.

Pliny the Elder- Jesus’ followers believed He was God.

also lucian, suetonius, thallus, trajan, etc. etc. etc.
1.Yes, but they don’t believe their religion is false which simply gives credence that the writers actually BELIEVED what they wrote.

2. This is the NT not the OT and if you read about Moses he is very meek. Moses wrote the main portion of Numbers but it is likely that portions were later added by scribes in Israel’s history.
The point of this is simply to point out to those who believe on popular opinion that the Bible is wrong to do some research. This isn’t my perfect paper but you should ask questions rather than just spew out that what a certain group of people believe is wrong b/c you think it is.

Also to a few of my dear criticizers. I went with the conservative scholar dating while you went with the liberal scholar dating. Next time i’ll mention that difference for you and hopefully put some of your hearts at ease.

Ok so I kind of have questions, or rather challenges to arguments against gay rights and using the bible as evidence.

1). Often times people say that they just want to keep the definition of marriage the same. But historically we have changed it quite frequently. I mean, before you parents got to choose who you could marry and they also had polygamy. To get to the point where marriage is now, we had to change it. (OK so this is the question) What would be the harm of changing the definition of marriage just one more time to make it more equal?

2). OK so a lot of people are against gay marriages because they say its against the Bible. Firstly, in the new testament, Jesus never says anything condeming gay marriage, but rather just says that he wants you to marry and have kids and all that. That is no real condemtion of gay marriage. Also, the whole concept of Christianity is that man is flawed, and we can be saved through Jesus. Now, if man is flawed, and God is all that is perfect, wouldn’t that mean that our clumsy human hands that wrote the Bible make an imperfect documentation of the word of God?

3). The Bible has polygamy, so why should we trust this book with the teachings of a God that enables this immorality? I know, everyone says you can’t compare marriage customs back then, but the thing is GOD DID NOT STOP THIS in the Bible. Since he didn’t, that either means he feels it is OK or he is an enabler, thus making him imperfect.
Mike, I do not believe you answered any of my questions.
For all you guys calling homosexuality abnormal, I hope none of you are religious, which is a far worse mental state. Or is ignorance the norm?
Yes i did see Chuck and Larry, that was so awesome. I felt sorry for that guy because people thought he was the cathcher : D
